A study conducted by the American Society for Microbiology showed that overall only about 67% of people washed their hands after using the toilet. This means that about a third of the population does not! Now we have Coronavirus and suddenly the world becomes obsessed with hand washing and hand sanitisers!!!
As with many other Coronavirus-related products, panic buying has cleared the shelves of cleaning products and other essentials, or introduced high pricing from third-party resellers. But as of this writing, Norwex still has hand cleanser in stock at pre Coronavirus prices, read on to see why I would choose this.
Hand sanitiser: How it can protect you from getting sick and when to use it
Washing your hands is still better than using hand sanitiser, but both help prevent the spread of disease. Hand sanitiser: the convenient, on-the-go method of cleaning your hands. The only problem is, hand sanitiser may not be as effective as washing your hands, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC says that washing your hands is a better tactic for removing certain viruses and bacteria, such as Cryptosporidium (causes diarrhoea) and Norovirus (stomach bugs).
With all the hand sanitiser products out there, there are a few points consumers should remember. First, hand sanitiser effects are short-lived. It literally lasts for that moment, and then you touch something, and you’ve re-contaminated your hands. That’s why resisting the urge to touch your eyes, scratch your nose or put your fingers against or in your mouth is another important practice for keeping bacteria and viruses at bay.
Part of the reason that a hand sanitiser isn’t as effective as washing your hands is that people often wipe their hands before the hand sanitiser dries completely. Also, if your hands are dirty or greasy, hand sanitisers may not work because they can’t penetrate dirt and grease like soap can.
Hand sanitisers are a convenient way to clean your hands when soap and water aren’t available. Often used on the go, hand sanitisers contain ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol or both to kill bacteria and viruses on your hands. Alcohols have long been known to kill germs by denaturing the protective outer proteins of microbes and dissolving their membranes.
The downside of alcohol is that if used repeatedly it strips your skin, leading to cracks and sores, an open pathway for infection. Also any chemical you put on your skin is absorbed into your blood stream within 26 seconds, whilst you’re checking to see how much alcohol is in that sanitiser check out the other ingredients!!! A quick search online revealed amongst other horrors, bubblegum, strawberry, multi coloured, glittery and unicorn hand sanitisers!! Words fail me!!
The current advice is to use sanitiser until you can reach a place where you can wash your hands properly; sanitiser is not a substitute for washing. Out and about I know what I would choose as I am sporting a lovely sore wrist from just using an alcohol based gel once two days ago when I was going into a meeting.
On the go my choice would be Norwex Hand Cleanser because it doesn’t contain alcohol, but neither does soap and water!
